Madrid, (EFE).- World Padel Tour drafts a “groundbreaking and surprising” strategic plan. The goal, to maintain the presence of the players, so that they remain in the circuit for the new competition. Àlex Corretja (Barcelona, 74) is leading the new WPT project after taking office as Vice-President, held by Ramón Agenjo since 2017.
Versatile, analyst at Eurosport, TVE and SER, Corretja ends up as an executive at the WPT to “stay the best”. He runs an organization whose sport he sells television rights to 140 countries.
Q: Why this new challenge in your life?
Answer: It motivates me enormously. Keep growing and evolving. I come from tennis and to me they are like cousins; there is no competition, I have always seen it as growth. From my vision as a professional tennis player I can contribute not only to Damm -owner of WPT- and to the organization of the World Padel Tour, but also to the players to understand them and pass on their ideas. My dream is to build this bridge and that we all understand each other.
I’m very motivated because it’s a really great opportunity and I’ve always practiced paddle tennis since I was little. In paddle tennis I only get better and in tennis I only get worse (laughs). Padel has always been a very important motivation for me.
Q: Why this boom in paddle tennis?
A: Padel is a sport that has grown tremendously, especially the one that has evolved the most in the twenty-first century. You see it all over the world, paddle tennis courts are everywhere. I played it before, but when I retired I started investing many hours, training with professionals…
Socially, it is a very exciting sport because it can be played by young people, older people, who have not yet picked up a shovel… That makes it a very global sport and millions of people around the world are practicing it today. At World Padel Tour we have the best track in the world and we want it to stay that way. We want to stay the best.
Q: You are leading the bet on the future of the World Padel Tour to, as you say, remain the best. What can you tell us about these plans?
A: I can tell you that in a few days or weeks we will present a new proposal, a new improved circuit that will be groundbreaking and surprising. A very great effort is made in all respects by the World Padel Tour. It’s not just an economic issue, it’s a technological issue, how you present the track and continue to improve it.
We have all had to make progress in life. I played very well on clay and if I didn’t improve on hard courts I could never be in the top ten. These are the examples you should take; what has served me can serve in the World Padel Tour. The news to come, for boys and girls, will be impressive; It’s something very exciting and I fully trust that we’re going to convince them that this will continue to grow like no other. I have no doubts.
Q: A future where, as it is now and was in the past, there will be Estrella Damm. How important is your support for the development of padel?
Answer: It’s everything. Damm has been behind the World Padel Tour for ten years, betting on padel before it even existed on a professional level. A brand has been created, the players have grown with them, thanks to Damm they have left their mark on the players and thanks to this World Padel Tour and Damm they have grown. What has been separated? Yes it is correct. And in fact I am here to help us all move forward; I think that’s the most important.
Then, as logical, everyone should try to look at their interest, but knowing and being very clear that Damm believes and has been committed to padel for years; also at the base with training, scholarships for players… this also counts.
